As a beer lover, I'm always ready to try something new. Since I'm based in Destin, Florida, I'm fortunate that I can drive to about 12 breweries and brewpubs within about an hour or so.
When I see that one of our local breweries has introduced a new brew, I'm typically pretty quick to give it a try.
I stopped by Idyll Hounds Brewing Company in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida recently as they had unleashed the White Bronco, which they describe as a "deliciously juicy IPA." The hazy brew clocks in at 6.7 percent ABV with notes of passion fruit, stone fruit and citrus.
All I can say is, wow. This is an awesome brew. If you made it by to try the White Bronco, you definitely were in for a treat. Idyll Hounds Brewing Company is located at 845 Serenoa Road in Santa Rosa Beach.
While I was in Pensacola, Florida for the 5th Annual Fish House Craft Beer Fest I made it a point to swing by Gulf Coast Brewery. My wife and I were looking to play a little table tennis, so why not enjoy a beer or two at the same time?
I ordered the Blood Orange Light Ale this go-round. The light brew was definitely tasty and has a light, yet crisp and refreshing citrus flavor from the blood orange. It weighs in at 4 percent ABV and 14 IBU.
Given that the Florida sun was blazing hot that day, it was a great beer to cool down with. Gulf Coast Brewery is located at 500 East Heinberg Street in Pensacola.
My most recent brewery trip was to Grayton Beer Company. They had just introduced a Belle Meade Bourbon Barrel Aged Belgian Dubbel. Talk about awesome! I sipped on a couple of them in the taproom, then purchased a 750ml bottle to take home for later.
Here's how the folks at Grayton Beer describe the Dubbel Barrel: "bold malt flavors of caramel and toffee, which are complimented by tones of dark fruit and clove spice. A complex barrel character of vanilla and maple syrup is finished with the trademark rye spice of Belle Meade Bourbon. The addition of orange peel and cheery make this an old-fashioned match made in heaven."
I can tell you that bourbon and fruit flavors definitely shine through on this one. This may just be one of the best brews I've tried in quite some time. Swing by the taproom at 217 Serenoa Road in Santa Rosa Beach.
Some of our other local breweries are working on some new brews as well, so I can't wait to see how they turn out. The gang over at Ye Old Brothers Brewery in Navarre, Florida tell me they have just released a watermelon wheat and have a white IPA following for the summer.
Brewmaster Bill Bunning says they will also be featuring a blueberry wit and a Jasmine saison. As they roll into the fall season, Bill will roll out their Oktoberfest brews, then in early September he plans to brew up a New England IPA which they'll feature at the Emerald Coast Beer Festival.
Let me know what awesome brews you've come across lately. I'm always looking to try something new, so let's connect.
